What does he want?

I believe he’s looking for sex.

I understand if you're skeptical. I didn’t even think of it until I had watched two seasons of the show, but after a while it became obvious. He’s looking for a mate.

Imagine you are a member of a species that is so advanced that they can bend space and time to their will. Your benevolent race considers themselves to be guardians of the universe, through thousands of dimensions and all times. Policing the universe is, of course, complicated. Eventually they find themselves in a devastating war, that eventually devolves into pure genocide.

In the end, both sides are wiped out. Everyone dies except you. What do you do? Despair? Perhaps. But you are a member of a species that has found a way to escape natural death, with the kind of technology that involves bending the fabric of reality. With this kind of technology, bringing back your species isn’t impossible, it would just take time.

You can’t change the outcome of the war, but you can repopulate the universe with your people. You just need to go back far enough, to gather the genetic material from your ancestors, the little mutations, enough to build someone of your own race. Or maybe you can take an ancestor and alter them significantly enough so that they become like you. To do this you would need lots of samples from individuals who exhibit specific traits that later compose the genetic makeup of your people. Admittedly, this is like taking a chimp and making them into an Olympic athlete, but for someone as advanced as you it’s only a matter of time before you succeed.

Especially if you are a Doctor.

The question is, how will you know if you’ve reached your goal? When do you know if you’ve really reinvented your race, reconstructed your people from genocide? In the end, it comes down to pure sexual attraction, one of the lynchpins of selection, evolution and the quicker route of genetic change. You know that you’ve made a mate when you are attracted to them. The only way to be sure is to spend time with them, where you can quietly make your little changes. Females carry the double X, so it might be more worth your time to travel with women over men, though for the right man, you might make an exception. If it doesn’t work with one individual, you just keep the genetic progress you’ve made, release them back into the population and come back in a few years when your mutations have spread. It’s only a matter of time.

Of course, you have all the time you need.

You clever bastard.
